A garden room is a small, detached building with a high ratio of external surface area to internal volume. This means it loses heat faster than a room inside your house in winter and can overheat quickly in summer if it has large south-facing windows. Choosing the right heating and cooling solution is essential for year-round comfort.

This guide compares the main options, their costs, running expenses, and suitability for different uses.

Why Heating Matters More in a Garden Room

Inside your house, each room benefits from the warmth of adjacent rooms, the thermal mass of the building's walls and floors, and the central heating system that maintains a baseline temperature throughout the property. A garden room has none of these advantages. It is exposed to the elements on all six sides (four walls, floor, and roof), and when you turn the heating off, it cools down much faster than a room in the house.

This means two things. First, the quality of insulation is the single most important factor in keeping heating costs manageable — a well-insulated garden room (U-values of 0.25–0.30 W/m²K) will cost a fraction of what a poorly insulated one costs to heat. Second, the heating system needs to be responsive — able to bring the room up to a comfortable temperature quickly when you arrive, rather than running continuously.

Electric Panel Radiators

Electric panel radiators are the simplest and cheapest heating option to install. They mount on the wall, plug into a standard socket (or are hardwired to a dedicated circuit), and provide convective heat that warms the air in the room. Modern panel radiators are slim, quiet, and available with built-in thermostats and programmable timers.

For a 12m² garden room, one or two 1kW–1.5kW panel radiators are typically sufficient. They heat the room relatively quickly (15–30 minutes to reach a comfortable temperature from cold) and can be controlled individually or via a smart thermostat.

The main advantages are low installation cost, simplicity, and no maintenance. The disadvantage is that convective heating can feel uneven — the air near the ceiling is warmer than at floor level — and the running costs are higher than a heat pump because electric resistance heating converts electricity to heat at a 1:1 ratio.

Electric Underfloor Heating

Electric underfloor heating consists of heating cables or mats installed beneath the floor surface. It provides radiant heat from below, which feels exceptionally comfortable — warm feet and even temperature distribution throughout the room.

The installation cost is higher than panel radiators because the heating elements must be installed during the garden room build (or as part of a floor renovation). The system is controlled by a thermostat, often with a programmable timer so the floor is warm when you arrive.

The main advantage is comfort — underfloor heating is widely considered the most pleasant form of heating. It also frees up wall space that would otherwise be occupied by radiators. The disadvantages are the higher installation cost, the slower response time (45–90 minutes to heat the floor mass and warm the room), and the fact that it cannot be easily retrofitted to an existing garden room.

Underfloor heating works best when combined with good insulation and used on a timer, so the room is pre-heated before you need it.

Air Conditioning / Heat Pump Unit

A wall-mounted split air conditioning unit (also called a mini-split or air source heat pump) is the most efficient heating option and the only one that also provides cooling. These units work by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it inside (in heating mode) or extracting heat from inside and transferring it outside (in cooling mode).

The key advantage is efficiency. A heat pump delivers 3–4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity consumed (a coefficient of performance, or COP, of 3–4). This means running costs are approximately one-third of electric resistance heating. A unit also provides cooling in summer, which is increasingly valuable as UK summers become warmer.

The installation involves mounting an indoor unit on the wall and an outdoor unit (compressor) on an external wall or on a bracket nearby. The two units are connected by refrigerant pipes and electrical cables. Installation must be carried out by an F-Gas certified engineer.

The disadvantages are the higher installation cost (£800–£2,500 depending on the unit size and brand) and the visual impact of the outdoor compressor unit. Some homeowners also find the fan noise noticeable, although modern units are very quiet (typically 20–25 dB indoors).

For a garden room used year-round, a heat pump / air conditioning unit offers the best combination of efficiency, comfort, and versatility.

Infrared Panels

Infrared heating panels are flat, slim panels that mount on the wall or ceiling and emit infrared radiation. Unlike convective heaters (which warm the air), infrared panels warm objects and people directly, similar to the warmth you feel from sunlight.

The main advantages are very fast warm-up time (you feel the warmth within minutes), even heat distribution, no air circulation (which reduces dust movement), and a sleek, modern appearance. Some panels are available as mirrors or art prints, making them virtually invisible.

The disadvantages are that infrared heating only warms objects in the direct line of sight of the panel, so positioning is important, and the running costs are similar to electric panel radiators (1:1 electricity-to-heat conversion).

Cooling and Ventilation

Overheating is an increasingly common problem in UK garden rooms, particularly those with large south or west-facing windows. On a hot summer day, a garden room can reach 35°C or more without adequate ventilation or cooling.

Cross-ventilation is the simplest solution: openable windows on opposite walls allow air to flow through the room. This is effective on most UK summer days but insufficient during heatwaves.

Blinds and solar film on south-facing windows reduce solar heat gain significantly. External blinds or shutters are more effective than internal blinds because they block the sun before it enters the glass.

Roof overhangs and external shading can be designed into the building to shade south-facing glass during summer (when the sun is high) while allowing winter sun (when the sun is low) to enter and provide passive solar heating.

Mechanical ventilation — a small extract fan or a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) unit — provides controlled ventilation without relying on open windows. This is particularly useful for music studios or offices where external noise is a concern.

Air conditioning is the only option that guarantees comfort in all conditions. If your garden room has significant south-facing glazing and you need reliable cooling, a heat pump / air conditioning unit is the best investment.

What to Avoid

Portable fan heaters are cheap to buy but expensive to run, noisy, and a fire risk if left unattended. They are acceptable as emergency backup but should not be your primary heating.

Portable oil-filled radiators are safer than fan heaters but slow to heat up, bulky, and still expensive to run. Like fan heaters, they are a temporary solution, not a permanent one.

Gas heaters (bottled gas) should never be used in a garden room. They produce carbon monoxide, moisture, and are a serious fire and health risk in an enclosed space.
